Doornbach slum in Dunoon, at the foot of a Durbanville hills luxury vineyard estate, is an informal settlement dating back to 2009. Dunoon is bursting at the seams, with more than 30'000 people living in an area of just 1 square kilometre. Most families occupy unused pieces of land, some belonging to private owners, while others have built near the railway lines. It has been a scene of violent protests by residents demanding houses and services.
ACT was made aware of a small childcare facility housed in a ship container lacking adequate fencing, decent paving to play in winter and most of all safe and clean toilet facilities. ACT and their local partner CWI Projects moved in to clean up and renovate the entire infrastructure in record time, making it safer and healthier for the children going there every day.
